GSID continues to collaborate with our research partners around the world to expand our understanding of HIV. GSID has contributed to further analysis of the RV144 trial with recent papers in the Journal of Virology, AIDS Research and Human Retroviruses, and the Journal of Infectious Diseases. Dr. Faruk Sinangil, our Managing Director of Research & Development, also contributed to another Journal of Virology paper on a swarm analysis of HIV virus variation both within individuals and between them. In addition, Executive Director Don Francis recently took a look back on 30 years of US government AIDS policy, in a commentary piece for the Journal of Public Health Policy. GSID continues to work with HIV vaccine researchers around the world to analyze the results of the Thai HIV vaccine trials. This month, GSID researchers co-authored a new analysis of neutralizing antibody responses to HIV in two vaccine trials in Thailand (RV144 and VAX003), which was published in the

The results of the correlates of protection studies from the RV144 trial were presented at the AIDS Vaccine 2011 conference in Bangkok Thailand. A brief discussion of the results can be found here. Detailed results from the Thai Phase III HIV vaccine clinical trial were presented at the AIDS Vaccine 2009 Conference in Paris, France, and published online in The New England Journal of Medicine. In Paris, Dr. Supachai of the Thailand Ministry of Public Health presented the RV144 trial results, and Col. Michael of the US Military HIV Research Program presented primary and subgroup analysis of the trial. A webcast of the Thai Trial Special Session is available on the AIDS Conference 2009 website. Dr. Faruk Sinangil has co-authored a paper for Molecular Biology and Evolution, which looks at the phylodynamics of HIV-1 in the VAX004 trial in North America. The paper is available here.

GSID announced that a Phase III clinical trial of an investigational HIV vaccine regimen has been shown to be safe and modestly effective in preventing HIV infection. The press release is available here (PDF).

GSID co-founder Dr. Phillip Berman has received a major grant from the NIH for his lab at UC Santa Cruz to follow up on the promising findings published in the August issue of Journal of Virology (see below). Press release available here.

Dr. Faruk Sinangil has co-authored a paper in the August issue of the Journal of Virology, which highlights a novel structural variant in an HIV coat protein that could be exploited in designing new vaccines. The research made use of the specimens and data in the GSID HIV Repository. Abstract available here.

Dr. Faruk Sinangil has co-authored a paper in the July issue of Retrovirology, which looks at ethnic differences in the adaption rate of HIV gp120 in North American volunteers from the VAX004 trials. The complete article is available here.
